Question: How do Revit links work?

When you link a model into a project, Revit opens the linked model and keeps it in memory. The more links a project contains, the longer it can take to open. Linked models are listed in the Revit Links branch of the Project Browser.

The Manage Links dialog has tabs for Revit models, IFC links, CAD Formats, DWF Markups, Point Clouds, and Topography. Under the tabs are columns that provide information about the link. The Manage Links dialog has tabs for Revit models, IFC links, CAD Formats, DWF Markups, and Topography.

Binding Revit link makes elements from the link to change position in Revit.

Creating Revit links

  1. In the ribbon, in the Insert tab, click Link Revit.
  2. In the Import/Link RVT dialog box, select (single click) the RVT file to link.
  3. In the Positioning list, select Origin to Origin. …
  4. If the origins don’t match, move the link. …
  5. In the Project browser, use Revit Links to reload or unload the link.

You can also explode the import symbol immediately into Revit text, curves, lines, and filled regions. This is a full explode. NoteYou cannot explode linked files or an import symbol that would yield more than 10,000 elements.

Can you edit a linked Revit model?

Right click on the link you want to edit. Select Open (and Unload). (This will open the model safely in the same session of Revit.) Make the changes you want then save and sync the file.

Causes: Bind Link is not recommended for models of huge size or complexity. Many elements need to be un-joined or deleted as part of the copy and paste operation.

When you link a model that contains other linked models, the links become nested. You can show or hide nested linked models in the host model.

What is the difference between overlay and attachment in Revit link?

Overlay does not load nested models into the host model, so they do not display in the project. Attachment loads nested linked models in the host model and displays them in the project.
